Community Endowment Fund Story
For two years the God’s Garage vehicle-repair ministry operated comfortably out of the maintenance building at Crossroads Community Church. Started by a retired mechanic who followed his faith into the service of helping income-restrained residents get vehicle service for the cost of the replacement parts, demand eventually became so great that it was straining the physical space.
Crossroads turned to the Community Foundation of Howard County. Thanks to a grant, the God’s Garage team opened the doors of their new home in what had been an empty warehouse and put the first car up on the lift (one of two in operation in the new facility). Available funds also covered much of the cost of equipping the garage, ensuring that the current and future mechanics -- who also generously donate their time and talents -- have the tools they need on site. From the air pressure system to the guest restroom, the new space is designed with the customer in mind and can easily be expanded to meet future needs.
It couldn’t have come at a more important moment. The Covid-19 pandemic has re-written rules and reordered lives. Having reliable personal transportation for those essential trips is a necessity for many Howard County residents. True to their mission, God’s Garage and the Community Foundation are providing a helping hand in challenging times.
