CARROLL COUNTY COMMUNITY FOUNDATION SUPPORTERS CELEBRATE CARROLL COUNTY PROMISE
Members of Friends of Carroll County support Carroll County Promise
Aug. 27, 2018 -- Members of the Carroll County Community Foundation’s “Friends of Carroll County” gathered recently to learn more about the Carroll County Promise program and support the Foundation.
The Carroll County Promise is an initiative of activities for youth and families to build hope for their future and create a community college-going culture. It helps build youth and families understanding of what is required to set children on a path to education success.
At the event, Dr. Greg Norman, chairman of the Carroll County Community Foundation Services Committee, thanked everyone for their support of the Carroll County Community Foundation and the Carroll County Promise program. This year donors supported the Promise through their Friends of Carroll County membership. During the week of June 18-22 donations were eligible for a $1 for $1 match from Prosperity Now. In total, donors helped to raise more than $35,900 that was eligible for the match initiative.
Guest speaker Phil Maurizi, vice president of Promise Indiana Operations, provided an overview of the Promise Indiana initiative. “I use Carroll County, Indiana, as an example when I talk about the raising funds for the Promise,” said Maurizi. “Carroll County donors raised more than any of the other Promise communities. Carroll County is doing an amazing job.”
Maurizi said that the Promise works to bring college to the front of the mind for students and families as a way to form a college-savings identity. This is accomplished by leveraging the entire community through the following steps:
Secure $25 from the community for a student’s CollegeChoice 529 savings account – the Foundation has committed $11,000 towards this initial student account support in Carroll County.
Initiate college and career discussions with students.
Participate in a “Walk Into My Future” student college campus visit.
Secure family and friend “champions” who will give to a student’s account.
Maurizi also shared that students with a college savings account (even if it is only $1) are three times more likely to go to college and four times more likely to graduate.
During the evening, the Carroll County Promise, Carroll County Religious Education and Delphi Opera House were selected in a special grant drawing to recognize each organization’s worthwhile work in Carroll County.
The Carroll County Community Foundation, established in 1997, is a not-for-profit charitable organization governed by a volunteer board of local citizens.
