CARROLL COUNTY COMMUNITY FOUNDATION ANNOUNCES LILLY ENDOWMENT COMMUNITY SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENT

March 30, 2012 -- One Carroll County student has been named a recipient of a four-year, full-tuition scholarship as the Carroll County Community Foundation 2012 Lilly Endowment Community Scholar.

Angela Meador, daughter of Leonard and Karen Meador, will receive full tuition to the Indiana college of her choice and up to $900 per year for required books and equipment.

Angela, a Rossville Senior High School student, is a member of the Future Farmers of America (FFA) and the National Honor Society. She is a peer tutor for first grade students, Frankfort Rescue Mission volunteer, Living to Serve Grant committee chairperson and church youth group member.

She has earned many awards and honors that include Daughters of American Revolution Good Citizen Award, First Place Individual and Team in State 4-H Forestry Competition, First Place Team in State Environmental Contest, People to People International Ambassador Program Nominee, First Place Team at State FFA Wildlife Competition and Psi Iota Xi Top Junior Girl Scholarship.

Angela plans to attend Indiana Wesleyan University to study nursing.

This is the 15th year that the Lilly Endowment has funded the Community Scholars program. The Carroll County Community Foundation defined the criteria based on the endowment's goal to "raise the educational attainment in Indiana." The selection criteria identified by the Foundation included academic achievement; school, community and work activities; potential for success; and financial need. A committee of volunteers evaluated the applications and selected the four finalists who were interviewed by the Carroll County Community Foundation board. There were 19 Carroll County students who applied for the scholarship.

The finalists' names were submitted to Independent Colleges of Indiana (ICI) for the selection of recipients. ICI is a nonprofit corporation that represents 31 regionally accredited degree granting, nonprofit, private colleges and universities in the state.

The Foundation recognized the achievements of the three finalists with $1,000 scholarships. They include Kate Hickner from Carroll High School, daughter of Pat and Barb Hickner; Alyx Maxwell from Delphi Community High School, daughter of James and Charlene Maxwell; and Jacquelyn Tussinger from Carroll High School, daughter of Brian and Cynthia Tussinger.

"This was an impressive group of students," said Paul Manning, chairman of the Carroll County Community Foundation Services Committee. "This scholarship recognizes that a great portion of Indiana's future is dependent on retaining educated citizens. After interviewing the finalists, it's clear that our students are up to the challenge. It's a great program and the Foundation is pleased to be a part of it."

The Carroll County Community Foundation was established in 1997 as a not-for-profit charitable organization governed by a volunteer board of local citizens. Its purpose is to serve the interests of donors, to make grants and to act as a catalyst around issues of community importance in Carroll County.
