COMMUNITY FOUNDATION OF HOWARD COUNTY AWARDS GRANTS
Nonprofit organizations awarded $119,147 in 2021
December 29, 2021 – The Community Foundation of Howard County has awarded $79,947 in competitive grants during the second half of 2021. Combined with the first half total of $39,200, this brings the total of competitive grants awarded to $119,147 for the year.
“Howard County has a variety of nonprofit programs and services that need support,” said Joe Dunbar, chairman of the Community Foundation of Howard County Grants Committee. “These grants are awarded from our community endowment unrestricted funds that donors have contributed to with the intent to support needs that benefit the citizens of Howard County now and in the future. We are grateful for our donors’ foresight and generosity that ensure continued support for the community.”
The following nonprofit agencies and programs were awarded grants during the second half of 2021:
$15,000 to Coordinated Assistance Ministries (CAM) provides support for the addition of a shower area at CAM’s new residential location at 625 N. Union St. The additional shower area will benefit residents with mobility issues and allow supervisors to ensure the safety of clients.
$3,324 to Curtain Call Theatre for Children will assist with costs associated with an elementary production of Charlotte’s Web.
$5,000 to Eastern Howard Band Boosters for the commissioning of a piece of music in memory of former band director Chuck Whorwell.
$550 to Foster Faith will help to purchase hygiene items for children who are displaced from their homes.
$10,000 to the Friends of Howard Haven will be used to purchase a walk-in freezer for the Howard Haven Residential Community.
$2,000 to the Greater Kokomo Economic Development Alliance supports the 2022 CEO Leadership Summit.
$5,000 to Hoosiers Feeding the Hungry will be used to process donated livestock and deer. The processed meat will go to aid in hunger relief within Howard County.
$8,663 to the Howard County Historical Society provides support for the “Howard County African American History Revealed." Funds will be used to build a listening booth and interactive 3-D map for visitors, as well as to create an exhibit honoring Orval "Baggie" Hardimon. This exhibit is the beginning of an exhibit highlighting art and culture in Howard County.
$5,910 to the Kiwanis Club Foundation of Kokomo, Ind., will be used to fund the purchase of three pieces of musical instrument equipment for the Tot Park at Highland Park.
$1,000 to Kokomo High School will be used by the Band Department to support the commissioning of a piece of music entitled "The Spirit of Innovation." This composition represents Kokomo High School and the City of Kokomo.
$3,500 to the Kokomo Howard County Public Library will be used for early learning kits for library patrons who are caring for preschool-aged children without access to daycare or preschool.
$5,000 to the Kokomo Symphonic Society provides support for the "Symphonie Fantastique" performance.
$5,000 to Refreshing Springs Church will be used to purchase PPE and supplies for the Young Hearts Academy as added COVID-19 safety measures for children and staff.
$10,000 to the Sagamore Council, Boy Scouts of America will be used to build on existing STEM education efforts in 2022 by adding a STEM/NOVA track to the University of Scouting at Indiana University Kokomo; adding six new NOVA awards for Cub Scouts to earn; establishing a STEM-based merit badge skill center in Kokomo that will include welding and engineering; offering a Cub Scout robotics kit for units to check out using the Sphero Bolt Power Pack; holding a Day Camp with STEM activities.
The Community Foundation of Howard County Inc. was formed as a not-for-profit public charity in March 1991.
