COMMUNITY FOUNDATION OF HOWARD COUNTY GRANT SUPPORTS KOKOMO-HOWARD COUNTY PUBLIC LIBRARY

Foundation grant of $17,600 given to help fund 'City of Firsts' glass etchings display in renovated main library

April 16, 2010 — The Community Foundation of Howard County has contributed $17,600 through a grant in support of the Kokomo-Howard County Public Library’s "City of Firsts" glass etching display. Fifteen firsts will be highlighted on panels in a special glass etching wall display at the renovated main library. The display depicts 15 "firsts" for which Kokomo is known, along with a brief explanation describing the first. An additional panel will feature an introduction/history regarding the City of Firsts.

"We anticipate increased traffic through the library once the renovation is complete," said Ron Harper, president of the Community Foundation of Howard County. "This is an excellent opportunity to highlight Kokomo's history and the talents of local artists who are involved in the etching and design of the glass panels. This display can be used as an educational tool and showcases the community’s heritage. We are pleased to be able to support this project."

Harper presented the check to Susan Luttrell, president of the Kokomo-Howard County Public Library Board, on April 12 at a library board meeting.

"This grant allows the library to provide an opportunity to share the community's heritage in an interesting format that encourages discussion," said Charles Joray, director of the Kokomo-Howard County Public Library. "We hope to build community pride among our patrons by sharing Kokomo's rich history. The etchings will also give patrons an appreciation for a unique art form that is not often seen in our community. We thank the foundation for its support of this project."

The grant was approved by the Community Foundation of Howard County's Grant Committee in March.
