COMMUNITY FOUNDATION OF HOWARD COUNTY SHARES 'LEGACY SOCIETY' UPDATE WITH NONPROFIT SUPPORTERS
Family Service Association, Project Access and Habitat for Humanity win awards
Nov. 3, 2014 — Family Service Association of Howard County, Project Access and Habitat for Humanity of the Kokomo Community walked away winners from the Community Foundation of Howard County’s "Legacy Society" lunch held Oct. 30 at Pastariffic. Through a special monetary drawing, Family Service Association received $5,000, Project Access received $3,000, and Habitat for Humanity received $2,000 to be placed in each organization’s endowed fund at the Foundation. Twenty-three nonprofit organizations attended the lunch and were eligible for the drawing if they had five or more board members or supporters in attendance.
Hilda Burns, president of the Community Foundation of Howard County, shared some good news during the lunch. "Lilly Endowment’s Giving Indiana Funds for Tomorrow program has offered the opportunity for community foundations to participate in a matching gifts program, and we are excited. Howard County is eligible for $1 million in matching funds. When the challenge is successfully met, $2 million will be put to work in our community," Burns said.
Burns also said that the greatest transfer of wealth in history will occur in the next 10 to 50 years. A study provided by the Center for Rural Entrepreneurship projected that the present wealth in Howard County is $3.57 billion dollars. In the next 10 years, there will be more than $1 billion transferred in Howard County. If everyone gave the Community Foundation five percent over the next 10 years, total grantmaking would increase $2.58 million per year.
The Legacy Society was established to encourage estate planning and to recognize and honor all individuals who provide support for funds within the Community Foundation through their wills, trusts, life income gifts, retirement plans, life insurance designations and other planned gifts. These funds provide permanent financial stability for nonprofit organizations and support worthwhile charitable projects, programs and services that benefit the community. Currently, 45 nonprofit organizations are supported by endowed funds that were established through the generosity of donors.
The Community Foundation of Howard County, Inc. was formed as a not-for-profit public charity in March 1991. The Foundation seeks to serve donors and make grants to benefit the citizens of Howard County.
