COMMUNITY FOUNDATION OF HOWARD COUNTY AWARDS GRANTS
Non-profit organizations awarded more than $149,350 in first half of 2018
Aug. 24, 2018 -- The Community Foundation of Howard County has awarded more than $149,350 in competitive grants during the first half of 2018.
“The donors who give to our community endowment unrestricted funds are giving with the intent to benefit the community now and in the future,” said Joe Dunbar, chairman of the Community Foundation of Howard County Grants Committee. “Through their philanthropy, they have provided funds that support the programs and services nonprofit agencies offer in the community. We thank the donors and the organizations for helping to meet the diverse needs of this community.”
The following agencies and programs were awarded grants during the first half of 2018:
$10,000 to Family Service Association provides two-year funding support for the Systems of Care Program, a coordinated response to the opioid crisis that aims to address overall addiction and substance abuse in Howard County. Grant money will be used to help with start-up costs including operations, equipment, marketing, technology, and website creation and design.
$2,250 to the Howard County Historical Society will be used to purchase digitizing equipment that will preserve the images and information contained in the archives and increase public accessibility.
$1,000 to Indiana University Kokomo supported a Humanities Summer Camp. Grant money supported the first year for tuition costs and supplies for 20 seventh and eighth grade students. The goals are to help students become familiar with a college campus and allow them to develop critical thinking skills, articulate and defend ideas, and foster creativity.
$100,000 to Ivy Tech Community College provides a matching grant for “The Time is Now” Kokomo Campus renovation campaign.
$5,000 to Kokomo Community Concerts will provide funding support for the "Nashville Legacy: Jason Coleman & Meagan Taylor" concert.
$2,308 to the Kokomo Humane Society will be used to purchase smart television screens to be used in the adoption lobby, the conference/education room and in the Cat Cafe at the new facility. The screens will provide information and training.
$3,800 to the Kokomo Park Band provided funding for the 2018 Summer Concert Series.
$5,000 to the Kokomo Symphonic Society will provide support for the Brilliantly Broadway concert. Grant money will be used to help cover the costs of the concert, including conductor fees, musicians, music rental and license fees, projection fees, performance venue rental expense and marketing expenses.
$5,000 to Living Alternatives will be used to purchase signage, computers and cabinetry for Living Alternatives’ new facility.
$2,500 Mental Health America of Indiana was used to cover expenses for staff to participate in Youth Mental Health First Aid training. This training offers qualifications to instruct others to understand the warning signs of suicidal behavior, substance abuse and emotional instability that precede crisis intervention.
$2,500 to the National Inventors Hall of Fame supported the Camp Invention STEM Program in Western and Kokomo school districts. The grant provided need-based scholarships for up to 20 Howard County children to attend the summer camp focused on developing creativity, inventive thinking and problem solving skills.
$10,000 to Project Access will be used to provide hearing aids at a reduced cost for Project Access clients. Funds will also be used for ear molds and fittings.
The Community Foundation of Howard County, Inc. was formed as a not-for-profit public charity in March 1991.
