NEW BOARD MEMBERS JOIN COMMUNITY FOUNDATION OF HOWARD COUNTY
January 14, 2013 —The Community Foundation of Howard County has welcomed five new members to its board. Dr. Joanne Barnes, Joe Dunbar, Brian Hayes, Rick Smith and Douglas Vaughn have accepted appointments to the board.
"Each new member brings different experiences to our board that will help the Foundation to have a better understanding of our community," said Hilda Burns, president of the Community Foundation of Howard County.
Barnes is an Associate Professor, Graduate Studies in Leadership, at Indiana Wesleyan University. She is a Howard County Relay for Life volunteer and Bridges Outreach mentor. Barnes serves on the following Indiana Wesleyan committees: School of Business & Leadership Faculty Advisory Task Force, Midwest Scholars, University Technology, Scholarship, Student Affairs and Multicultural Enrichment Council.
Dunbar is retired from Kokomo-Center Schools. Currently, he serves on the Kokomo-Center School Board, Community Howard Regional Foundation Board, Kokomo Schools Foundation Board, City of Firsts Credit Union Board, Howard County Partners in Education Council and Kokomo-Howard County Library Board. He is Chairman of the Community Foundation of Howard County Grants Committee and is a Medicare counselor volunteer at St. Joseph Hospital. Dunbar is a former board member of the Foundation and the Howard County Historical Society.
Hayes is owner of Hayes Advisory Group - Retirement and Estate Planning, Wealth Management, Asset Protection, Tax Reduction and Wealth Transfer and Distribution. He is a previous member of the Kokomo Country Club Board of Directors. Hayes spent his childhood in Galveston, Ind., and has lived in Howard County for 18 years.
Smith has been the owner of Smith Financial since 1984. He is currently serving on the Advisory Board of the Boy Scouts of America, Greater Kokomo Economic Development Alliance Finance Committee and the Community Foundation's Finance and Investment Committees. Smith is a former board member of the Kokomo Country Club, Kokomo Rescue Mission, Kokomo Noon Rotary Club, Howard Regional Health Foundation, Community Foundation and Greater Kokomo Economic Development Alliance.
Vaughn is owner of Rite Quality Supplies. He was born in Haiti and came to America in 1963. Vaughn is founder and president of the Haitian Environmental Support Program, a board member of the Greater Kokomo Chamber of Commerce, Boys Scouts of America and Goodfellows. He is a former board member of the St. Joseph Foundation.
The new board members are replacing board members Tyler Moore, Craig Severns, Jeff Smeltzer and Bob Hingst.
The Community Foundation of Howard County, Inc. was formed as a not-for-profit public charity in March 1991.
