CARROLL COUNTY COMMUNITY FOUNDATION AWARDS GRANTS

Nonprofit organizations awarded more than $18,500 in 2012

December 17, 2012 -- The Carroll County Community Foundation has awarded more than $18,500 in competitive grants to Carroll County nonprofit organizations in 2012. The grants are awarded in six areas of interest: arts and culture, human services, civic affairs, health, education and community beautification.

"The nonprofit organizations in Carroll County offer a wide variety of services that improve the quality of life for our residents," said Paul Manning, Chairman of the Carroll County Community Foundation Services Committee. "As a Foundation, the support we offer through our competitive grants process to these organizations is intended to produce a positive and sustainable change in our communities. Our donors have entrusted us with this responsibility, and we thank them for sharing their resources with us."

The following agencies and programs were awarded grants:

$2,000 to Adams Mill will provide partial support towards the development of an interpretative plan and producing hands on exhibits designed to interest children. Grant money will be used for material acquisition and development purposes. The interpretative plan will help demonstrate the original purpose of the mill and enhance the artifacts and antiques on site. Children will have the opportunity to touch, feel and experience in a more interactive learning environment.

$700 to Book Readers and Horn Blowers will be used to help cover the expenses incurred in presenting "Raphael Mendez" Mexican American Musical Virtuoso to Delphi Elementary School. The purpose of the program is to encourage the love of reading, music and history in elementary-aged students.

$1,753 to the Carroll County Community Center will be used to clean, resurface, and replace the logo on the wood floor of the gymnasium.

$2,500 to the Carroll County Wabash and Erie Canal will provide funding towards two model canal boat replicas. This water model fits one gallery and will be a gathering point for children and adults. Visitors will be able to learn how real canal boats navigated through an operational lock and see the effects of water power when the boat nears the water wheel powering the model paper mill.

$750 to Delphi Community Schools for the Carroll County Adult Education Program (CCAP) will provide partial support for the CCAP Classroom Technology project. Grant money will assist in the purchase of laptop computers, peripheral equipment, white board, tables and chairs.

$500 to the Delphi Preservation Society will provide partial support to create a video tour of the Delphi Opera House. The video tour will remove the barrier of access to those unable to climb the steps to see the opera house. The video will document the "before" of the restoration process and will be available for viewing in the Opera House Gallery of Contemporary Art where tours begin. It will also be available through the Society and Opera House Web sites.

$3,000 to the Delphi Public Library will provide partial support for the "Carroll County Newspaper Digitization" project. Grant money will be used by all of the public libraries of Carroll County, including the Delphi, Flora and Camden libraries to make available the content of the county's newspaper files in digital format that will improve access and fill a need for historical information by local historians and genealogists.

$1,191 to Habitat for Humanity will provide support to purchase additional tools that are used to build homes in a multi-county service area. Duplicate tools will prevent delays for the laborers who are dedicated to creating a well-built home that fits into the neighborhood.

$639 to Junior Achievement of Carroll County will provide partial support for the "JA Personal Finance & Virtual Finance Park" programs. These programs teach students the fundamental elements of personal finances: earnings, saving, investing, budgeting, credit, risk management and giving.

$500 to Reach Out and Read Indiana will provide support for 150 Carroll County children in an evidence-based literacy program. Funding will allow pediatricians, physicians and nurses the ability to provide new, developmentally appropriate books to patients at every well-child visit between six months and five years of age.

$5,000 to the Carroll County Historical Society will be used to help purchase and install a functional heating and air conditioning system into the recently acquired Old Stone Barn in Delphi. The building is adjacent to the Wabash and Erie Canal and a short walk from the Delphi Opera House. Once the renovation is complete, the building can be used by the community as a year-round museum, interpretive center, and serve for other civic and educational functions.
