CLINTON COUNTY COMMUNITY FOUNDATION ANNOUNCES 2013 LILLY ENDOWMENT COMMUNITY SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENT
March 27, 2013 -- One Clinton County student has been named a recipient of a four-year, full-tuition scholarship as the Clinton County Community Foundation 2013 Lilly Endowment Community Scholar.
Karoline Stitsworth, daughter of Alan and Debbie Stitsworth, will receive full tuition to the Indiana college of her choice and up to $900 per year for required books and equipment.
Karoline, a Frankfort High School student, participates in many activities that include theatre crew, orchestra, Tri-M and academic bowl. She is a member of the National Honor Society and student council, where she has been secretary and treasurer. Karoline is a ten year 4-H member and club president. She has received an orchestra jacket award and perfect attendance award. In 4-H, Karoline has volunteered as a junior leader for six years and a camp counselor for four years. She also volunteers with the Learning to Lead program. Through the school’s tutoring program, Karoline helps elementary students with their homework, reading and math skills.
In her essay, Karoline said her career decision to teach was based on helping her sister with homework assignments and her other teaching experiences. She plans to attend Indiana University to study mathematics education.
This is the 16th year that the Lilly Endowment has funded the Community Scholars program. The Clinton County Community Foundation defined the criteria based on the endowment’s goal to "raise the educational attainment in Indiana." The selection criteria identified by the Foundation included scholastic achievements; school, community and work activities; essay; financial need; and an interview. There were 22 Clinton County students who applied for the scholarship. A committee of volunteers evaluated the applications and selected five finalists who were interviewed by the Clinton County Community Foundation board and Scholarship Committee. During the first 15 years of the program, 3,629 students have received Lilly Endowment Community Scholarships.
The finalists' names were submitted to Independent Colleges of Indiana (ICI) for the selection of recipients. ICI is a nonprofit corporation that represents 31 regionally accredited degree granting, nonprofit, private colleges and universities in the state.
The Foundation recognized the achievements of the four finalists with $1,000 renewable scholarships for a total of $4,000. They include Stephen Good from Clinton Prairie High School, son of Charles and Peggy Good; Logan Harness from Clinton Prairie High School, son of Frank and Bonnie Harness; Bethany McIlrath from Rossville High School, daughter of Kent and Cheryl McIlrath; and Stephanie Schrock from Clinton Prairie High School, daughter of Kent and Patricia Schrock.
"Each year the Scholarship Committee is impressed with the quality of the students," said John Shoup, chairman of the Clinton County Community Foundation Services Committee. "This process reinforces that students are achieving high academic standards, volunteering in their community and working towards a successful future. Indiana is fortunate to have a program that recognizes the achievements of the recipients and one that promotes the role of foundations in improving the quality of life in their communities."
