March 23, 2016 -- One Clinton County student has been named a recipient of a four-year, full-tuition scholarship as the Clinton County Community Foundation 2016 Lilly Endowment Community Scholar.
Javier Aguirre, son of Alvaro and Gloria Aguirre, will receive full tuition to the Indiana college of his choice and up to $900 per year for required books and equipment.
Javier, a Frankfort High School student, is a member of National Honor Society, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, student council and HOSA, an organization that promotes careers in the medical field. He is a four-year member of the soccer team. Javier’s volunteer activities include Strides for Stacy 5K. He also volunteers to set-up and serve at community Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners, St. Mary’s fish fry and FFA cookouts. As a Humane Society volunteer, he cleaned the animal cages and walked dogs. Javier’s honors and awards include the all A honor roll, Superintendent’s Award and Scholar Athlete Award.
He plans to attend Purdue University to study pharmacy.
For 18 years Lilly Endowment has funded the Community Scholars program. The Clinton County Community Foundation defined the criteria based on the endowment's goal to "raise the educational attainment in Indiana." The selection criteria identified by the Foundation included academic achievement; school, community and work activities; essay; financial need; and potential for success. There were 30 Clinton County students who applied for the scholarship. A committee of volunteers evaluated the applications and selected four finalists who were interviewed by the Clinton County Community Foundation board and Scholarship Committee.
The finalists' names were submitted to Independent Colleges of Indiana (ICI) for the selection of recipients. ICI is a nonprofit corporation that represents 31 regionally accredited degree granting, nonprofit, private colleges and universities in the state.
The Foundation recognized the achievements of the other three finalists with $1,000 renewable scholarships for a total of $4,000. They include Jaden Cornell, from Clinton Prairie High School, son of Phillip and Ann Marie Cornell; Angelina Koliy, from Clinton Prairie High School, daughter of Luda Koors and Igor Koliy; and David Miller, from Frankfort High School, son of Raymond and Teresa Miller.
“Lilly Endowment is working to strengthen Indiana by offering this scholarship to students in each county in the state,” said Alan Dunn, chairman of the Clinton County Community Foundation Services Committee. “The scholarship offers the opportunity for students to excel in their studies without the financial burden that can come with higher education. It also enhances the awareness of the work of community foundations in local communities as they strive to produce a positive and sustainable change in the communities they serve.”
