CLINTON COUNTY COMMUNITY FOUNDATION ANNOUNCES 2017 LILLY ENDOWMENT COMMUNITY SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENT
December 15, 2016 -- One Clinton County student has been named a recipient of a four-year, full-tuition scholarship as the Clinton County Community Foundation 2017 Lilly Endowment Community Scholar.
Nolan Anderson, son of Nathan and Connie Anderson, will receive full tuition to the Indiana college of his choice and up to $900 per year for required books and equipment.
Nolan, a Rossville High School student, is team captain of the varsity soccer team and is a member of the varsity track and field team, and Math Club. He is the operating officer of the Rossville Student IT Department and a member of his church's youth group. Nolan is a past team member of the Purdue Engineering Expo. His volunteer activities include Teenserve, Walk a Mile in My Shoes and assisting with his church's Sunday School. Nolan's academic awards include ISCA All-Academic Award, IATCCC Boys Track Academic All-State, Top English, Calculus and Physics Student Awards.
He plans to attend Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology to study engineering.
For 19 years Lilly Endowment has funded the Community Scholars program. The Clinton County Community Foundation defined the criteria based on the endowment's goal to "raise the educational attainment in Indiana." The selection criteria identified by the Foundation included academic achievement; school, community and work activities; essay; financial need; and potential for success. There were 25 Clinton County students who applied for the scholarship. A committee of volunteers evaluated the applications and selected six finalists who were interviewed by the Clinton County Community Foundation board and Scholarship Committee.
The finalists' names were submitted to Independent Colleges of Indiana (ICI) for the selection of recipients. ICI is a nonprofit corporation that represents 31 regionally accredited degree granting, nonprofit, private colleges and universities in the state.
The Foundation recognized the achievements of the other five finalists with $1,000 renewable scholarships for a total of $4,000. They include Nevan Freestone, from Clinton Prairie High School, son of Brent and Lanna Freestone; Emma McCarty, from Clinton Central High School, daughter of Bryan and Tone McCarty; Veronica Navarrete, from Frankfort High School, daughter of Rosalio Navarette and Olivia Salazar; Wynn Smith, from Rossville High School, son of Jennee Lawhorn and the late Philip Smith; and Rosetta Tolley, from Clinton Prairie High School, daughter of Brian and Marcia Tolley.
"Indiana students are fortunate to have access to the Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship," said Alan Dunn, chairman of the Clinton County Community Foundation Services Committee. "A full tuition scholarship offers the opportunity for students to attend the Indiana school of their choice and eases the financial burden associated with higher education. The program also highlights the role of community foundations and how they help to produce a positive change in the communities they serve."
