2010 HOWARD COUNTY SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS ANNOUNCED

Community Foundation of Howard County award approximately $365,000 in scholarships for 2010-11 school year

June 18, 2010 —Through the Community Foundation of Howard County, more than 65 scholarships from 35 scholarship funds have been awarded to Howard County students with an approximate value of $365,000, including the two Lilly Endowment Community Scholarships. The students were recognized at a Scholarship Reception at the Terrace Room of the St. Joan of Arc Campus, Kokomo, Ind. In addition to the scholarship recipients, parents, donors, educators, community volunteers and leaders attended the event in recognition of the efforts of the students.

"Through the generous contributions of the donors, the achievements of the students have been acknowledged and rewarded with these scholarships," said Glenn Grundmann, Scholarship Chair of the Community Foundation of Howard County. "The pressure of paying for college can be a significant obstacle for many students. With these awards, we hope some of the financial weight has been lifted and they can focus on their future career choices."

The students and scholarships they were awarded are listed below:

Carl Anderson Scholarship Award

Amber Hudson, daughter of Mark and Daphne Hudson, is a graduate of Western High School and plans to attend Huntington University to study social studies education and social work.

Kathie Beatty Memorial Scholarship

Benjamin Irwin, the son of James and Christine Irwin, plans to attend Purdue University to study accounting and finance.

Jenny Michelle Butler Memorial Scholarship

Nathan Lyons, the son of Mark and Jennifer Lyons, is a graduate of Western High School and plans to attend Purdue University to pursue a degree in economics.

Aaron Van Auken, the son of Jerry and Robin Van Auken, is a graduate of Western High School and will be attending Ball State University to study telecommunications.

M. Joyce Cook Memorial Scholarship

Emily Hoeksema, the daughter of Curt and Vivian Hoeksema, is a graduate of Northwestern High School and will attend Taylor University to study elementary education.

Larissa Lange, the daughter of Steve and LeAnn Lange, is a graduate of Northwestern High School and will attend Indiana University-Kokomo to study psychology.

Richard Crosser Memorial Scholarship for Taylor and Kokomo High Schools Fund

John Fantuzzo, the son of Donald and Stephanie Fantuzzo, is a Taylor High School graduate who will be attending Indiana University-Kokomo to study accounting.

Casey Shipley, the son of Tim Shipley and Leslie Beck, is a Kokomo High School graduate who will be attending Wabash College to study business.

Jesse W. Dunn Total Effort Award

Jordan Broomfield, daughter of Jesse and Julie Broomfield, graduated from Kokomo High School and plans to attend the University of Indianapolis or Indiana University Purdue University-Indianapolis to study physical therapy.

Max M. Earl Memorial Scholarship

Erik Pattison is a 2007 graduate of Indiana University-Kokomo. He will begin his fourth year of medical school at the Indiana University School of Medicine.

Richard L. and Marion J. Eller Scholarship Fund

Andrew Hunkeler, the son of Hugh and Cynthia Hunkeler, is a Northwestern High School graduate. He will attend Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology to study mechanical engineering. Andrew will also be playing football while at Rose-Hulman.

Erick Miller, the son of Rick and Barbara Miller, is a second-time recipient and is attending Ivy Tech Community College studying agricultural business management.

Shayne Riley, son of Troy and Michelle Riley, is a third-time recipient and will be a junior at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis where he is studying mechanical engineering.

Tony Gabriel Student Athlete Scholarship Fund

Austen Conwell, son of Michael Conwell and Brenda Garibaldi, will be attending Anderson University where he will study kinesiology/sports medicine. Austen will be playing football and participating in track for the Ravens.

Seth Vautaw, son of Keith Vautaw and Sherrie Alexander, will be attending Danville Community College to study general studies.

David Brinkley, son of James and Tammy Brinkley, is a second-time recipient of this award. He will be a sophomore at Indiana University-Kokomo where he is studying nursing.

Evan Schroeder, son of Michael and Penny Schroeder, is a second-time recipient of this award and will be a sophomore at Purdue University studying finance/economics.

W.G. Harter Memorial Scholarship Fund

Kumar Mantravadi, son of Narayan and Jackie Mantravadi, plans to attend Purdue University to study biomedical engineering.

C. V. Haworth Memorial Scholarship Fund

Michael Heilman, son of Mike and Donna Heilman, plans to attend Indiana University in the fall to pursue a degree in accounting/finance.

Gerald Hood Memorial Scholarship Fund

Alexander Pier, son of Steve and Melissa Pier, plans to attend Indiana University-Kokomo to pursue a degree in math education.

William S. & Susannah B. Hough Scholarship Fund

Taylor Butcher, daughter of Sheila Jean Butcher Morrow, is a graduate of Kokomo High School. Taylor will be attending Indiana University-Kokomo to pursue a degree in nursing.

Hayley Crawford, daughter of Doug Crawford and Gail Crawford, is a graduate of Eastern High School. Hayley will be attending Indiana University-Kokomo where she will study nursing.

Mitzie Johnson is a junior at Indiana University-Kokomo studying accounting.

David Brinkley is a sophomore at Indiana University-Kokomo studying nursing.

Alexis Reed, daughter of Jayne Reed and Gary Reed, is a sophomore at Indiana University-Kokomo studying biology.

Howard-Tipton County Central Labor Council

Alexandria Combs, the daughter of David and Lois Combs, is a graduate of Northwestern High School and plans to attend Butler University to study exploratory studies.

Cole Smith, the son of Craig and Belinda Smith, is a graduate of Tri-Central High School and plans to attend Butler University to study pharmacology.

Danny M. Keating Sr. Memorial Scholarship

Ronald Johnston, son of Debra Kennedy, is planning to attend Ball State University to pursue a degree in nursing.

Rebecca Weirauch, daughter of Samuel and Judith Weirauch, plans to attend Purdue University to study physics.

Knolinski Family Scholarship Award

Russell Reed, the son of Benjamin and Sharon Reed, is a graduate of Eastern High School and plans to attend Purdue University to pursue a degree in biomedical engineering.

Kokomo Country Club Scholarships

Madeline Cassidy, daughter of Steve and Laura Cassidy, graduated from Kokomo High School this year and will attend Butler University studying sports nutrition.

Toby Richards, son of Patrick Richards and Tari Richards, graduated from Northwestern High School and plans to attend Indiana University-Kokomo to pursue a degree in general studies.

Shelby Sherman, daughter of Thomas and Gayle Sherman, graduated from Northwestern High School. Shelby will attend Indiana University-Kokomo studying respiratory therapy.

Richard Woerner, son of Julie Woerner and Rich Woerner, graduated from Kokomo High School. Richard will attend Indiana University Purdue University-Indianapolis to pursue a degree in finance.

Kokomo High School "Spirit of 1961"

Jordan Broomfield, the daughter of Jesse and Julie Broomfield, plans to attend the University of Indianapolis or Indiana University Purdue University-Indianapolis to study physical therapy.

Kokomo High School Class of 1964

Zachary Gibson is a third-time recipient and will be a junior at Indiana University studying exercise science.

David Wesche is a fourth-time recipient and will be a senior at Franklin College studying business administration.

Kokomo High School Class of 1969

Eric Evans, the son of Sarah Elliott and Kenneth Evans, plans to attend Indiana University to study nursing.

Mayor's Advisory Council Scholarships for Disability Issues

Shelby Hufford is the daughter of Vess Hufford and Paula Kucholick and is a graduate of Kokomo High School. Shelby plans to attend Ivy Tech Community College to study special education.

Jared Isaac is the son of Wayne and Pam Isaac and is a graduate of Eastern High School. Jared plans to attend Ivy Tech Community College and plans to study fire science and welding.

Lauren Olds is the daughter of Libby DeMaio and Kevin Olds and is a graduate of Kokomo High School. Lauren plans to attend the Art Institute of Indianapolis to study graphic design.

Nicholas Weitzel is the son of Virgil and Patricia Weitzel and is a graduate of Kokomo High School. Nicholas plans to attend Vincennes University where he will study public safety.

Alexis Ungerer, the daughter of Brian and Karen Ungerer, is a graduate of Kokomo High School and will be attending Ball State University to study nursing.

Linda F. Pagel Memorial Scholarship

Elizabeth Clark, daughter of Robert and Lisa Clark, is a graduate of Tri-Central High School. Elizabeth plans to attend Butler University to pursue a pharmacy degree.

Donald B. Smith Memorial Scholarship Fund

Patrick Fountain is the son of Susan Hutchins and step-son of Rick Hutchins, and son of John Fountain and step-son of Lori Fountain. Patrick is a graduate of Western High School and plans to attend Indiana University to study accounting.

James F. and Janet G. Smith Trust Scholarship

Shelby Davis, daughter of Thomas and Tanya Davis, will be attending Indiana University-Kokomo to pursue a degree in radiography.

Brandon Hainlen, son of Len and Debra Hainlen, will be attending Indiana University-Kokomo to study accounting.

Helen and Morris Stout Scholarship Fund

Paul Kennelly, son of Thomas and Christine Kennelly, plans to attend Purdue University-Kokomo to pursue a degree in mechanical engineering.

Olivia Ortmann, daughter of DelRoy and Donna Ortmann, plans to attend Indiana Wesleyan University to study international and community development.

Thacker Memorial Scholarship Fund

Brandon Hainlen, son of Len and Debra Hainlen, will be attending Indiana University-Kokomo to study accounting.

Sadie A. Townsend Memorial Scholarship

Tyler 'TJ' Weir, son of Tim and Shelly Weir, plans to attend Ball State University to study business administration.

Turnaround Scholarship Fund

Shannara Fife, daughter of Christine Ellis, is attending Ivy Tech Community College.

Western Women's Scholarship Fund

Brooke Lewis, daughter of Dave and Lisa Lewis, is a third-time recipient of this award and will be a junior at Indiana University-Kokomo studying elementary education.

Frederick E. Wideman, M.D. Taylor Student Athlete Scholarship

Larry Price, Jr., a 2008 graduate of Western High School, is the son of Larry and Karen Price. Larry is a third-time recipient of this award and will be a junior at Purdue University where he is pursuing a degree in engineering.

Katie Maddox, a 2007 graduate of Eastern High School, is the daughter of Elaine Maddox and Michael Maddox. Katie is a fourth-time recipient of this award and will be a senior at Purdue University where she is pursuing a degree in business management.

Franklin Zehring Scholarship Fund

Alexandria Combs, daughter of David and Lois Combs, is a 2010 graduate of Northwestern High School and plans to attend Butler University to study exploratory studies.

Alyssa Odell, daughter of Trent and Stacy Odell, is a third-time recipient and will be a junior at Indiana Wesleyan University studying art education.

Marion Cherry, daughter of Ralph Cherry and Karen Altergott, is a fourth-time recipient and will be a senior at Indiana University studying psychology.

Community Foundation of Howard County Scholars

Madeline Cassidy, daughter of Laura Cassidy and Steve Cassidy, is a graduate of Kokomo High School. She will be attending Butler University studying sports nutrition.

Shelby Beasley is the daughter of Charles and Pamela Beasley and a recent graduate of Eastern High School. Shelby plans to attend DePauw University to pursue a major in psychology.

Stephen Chou is the son of Thomas and Nellie Chou and a graduate of Northwestern High School. Stephen plans to attend Taylor University and major in mathematics education.
